A growing tension between democratization and unification on one hand and authoritarianism and fragmentation on the other one can all be seen in contemporary Europe. This is why we consider it very important to explore and to try to understand the historical, political, economic, social, cultural, and philosophical roots which have led us to the present European reality. The overall goals of this conference are therefore to give students the opportunity to present original research, express and exchange their opinions and ideas, and meet other students who have common interests in the studies of Europe. Students will discuss issues such as birth and development of the idea of Europe, dynamics of ethnic and national loyalties, and the role of regions within Europe. The best papers will be selected for publication and the best presentation in every panel will be awarded as well.
Although paper proposals from any area of study will be considered, the organizers of the conference especially welcome paper proposals in the following areas:
- Identity/Ethnicity/Nationality
- Aspects of EU Integration
- Economic Aspects of EU Enlargement
- Conflict and Peace in Europe
- Integration and Fragmentation in Europe
- What is Europe? - Various Perspectives
- Europe in a Globalized World
Conference Outline
General Description. The conference will be a three-day event hosted by the Civic Education Project of the Czech and Slovak Republics and the Anglo-American College in Prague. The conference will begin on the evening of Friday, November 30th and end on the afternoon of Sunday, December 2nd. Beginning Friday afternoon, student participants and other attendees will register for the conference, and in the evening all participants will gather together to meet each other and enjoy a "welcome" dinner. The organizers of the conference will group students into panels of four to six students, and they will present their papers at panels on Saturday and Sunday. Each panel will have a chair chosen by the conference organizers. Following the paper presentations, the chair will open the floor to discussion and questions. In addition to making their own presentation, participants will be expected to attend the other panel presentations and to take part in their discussions. Cultural events related to the Czech Republic will also be organized. The organizers will pay all costs associated with the conference, including accommodation.
Participants. Only students of Civic Education Project teaching fellows in institutions of higher education in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, students of Anglo-American College in Prague, and of the University of Vienna, are eligible to submit paper proposals. Participants will be chosen through a selection process involving a Conference Selection Committee.

Proposals are due by the end of October and the decisions will be made by November 11th.
Papers. Papers should be typed, double-spaced, use Times New Roman 12 font, and be six to ten pages. They should be written in English. Students should also hand over three hard copies and a floppy disk of their paper at the time of registration.
